If you use a prosthesis or orthosis, you may fill out a short survey to become part of the Orthotics and Prosthetics Research Registry. By signing up for the registry, you give permission to researchers at the University of Michigan to contact you about opportunities for participating in studies based on the information you provide in the form. Interested in joining the lab?


Postdoctoral Fellows

We are looking for post-doctoral fellows to work on projects related to improving and assessing prosthetic control (see projects 1,2 and 4 in Current Projects).  Ideal candidates will have a PhD in Kinesiology, Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Robotics or related field.  Desired qualifications include: strong publication record, excellent written and oral communication skills, knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, and experience in computer programming.  If you are interested, please contact Dr. Gates at gatesd@umich.edu with statement of interests, cv, and names of three references. 

PhD Students

Dr. Gates can advise Ph.D. students in Movement Science, Biomedical Engineering, and Robotics.  Prospective students who are interested in the lab are encouraged to look through our current projects and identify which project areas best match their interests.  Dr. Gates is also able to mentor students in the  interdisciplinary PhD program which allows students to receive a PhD in multiple topics.  The second degree program can be added after successful completion of one semester in one of the above disciplines. Master's and Undergraduate Students

Students are accepted into the lab to work on teams led by our PhD students and staff.  We encourage you to look through our lab’s current projects and reach out to the contact listed for the project to learn more about any openings.

Our labs and offices are located in the School of Kinesiology Building at  830 N. University Ave. Ann Arbor, MI 48109  (see map)

Research participants should park in the designated spaces on the side of the west side of the building (closest to State St).
